"...He looked us over and sighed.
'Well, wait a sec and I'll see what i can do about this mess.' Then he took a good look at me. 'Ponyboy, are you wet?'
'Y-y-yes-s,' I stammered through
chattering teeth.
'Glory hallelujah!' He opened
the screen door and pulled me in, motioning for Johnny to follow. 'You'll die of pneunmonia 'fore the cops ever get you.'"
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Chapter 4 pg. 60
This passage from The Outsiders is a great example of bantering because of the
way Dally is speaking to Ponyboy and Johnny. Dally asks Ponyboy a question of which the answer is apparent just
by looking at him. He asks "Ponyboy, are you wet?" though he would have known the answer just by a first glance at his
wet clothes and hair. Dally asks this question not only to be funny but to make fun of the boys for getting into the "mess"
in which he refers to that he will be cleaning up. Not only does he does he ask redundant questions, but by saying "Glory
hallelujah!" we can see that Dally is mocking Ponyboy in the fact that he is wet and tries to be a mother figure by inviting
him into the house before he "dies of pneunmonia." This illustrates not only the humor and mocking tone of this passage
but also a playful conversation between the two.
