"...Indeed, I appreciate junk as much as the next
fellow, and I know full well that the printing press has generated enough of it to fill the Grand Canyon to overflowing. Television
is not old enough to have matched printing's output of junk.
And so, I raise no objection to television's junk. The best
things on television are its junk, and no one and nothing is seriously threatened by it...."
-Amusing Ourselves to Death By Neil Postman pg. 16
This passage from Amusing Ourselves to Death is an example
of a humorous tone because of the word choices Neil Postman made to explain what television is. The way he repeditively
explains television as "junk" shows the humour in his writing. Junk has a negative connotation to it and so Postman shows
how television has a negative effect and thus the humor in the passage is shown. Humor is something that provokes laughter
and as you read about television as junk and how the printing press has made enough junk to fill the Grand Canyon which we
all know is huge, we laugh at the thought of seeing papers filled in the cracks of the Grand Canyon. Neil Postman refers to
television as junk in order to bring humor to his piece of writing and deliver his message in a humorous way.
